Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” (v34)

* Jesus prayed for His abusers. The prophecy was fulfilled – “And He bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.” (Isaiah 53:12). “Father, forgive them!” – this is what we always hear when we come with a broken and contrite heart to the cross.

… they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus. (v26)

* We may be caught in misfortunes when we journey through life, like Simon was during his trip. Out of no reason he was forced to carry a cross of humiliation on his back. Despite that, he gained a glorious saviour in the end.

Luke 23:1-25

* In the natural world, trees will die of old age, wounds or diseases. But before their deaths, a number of trees will develop growth buds, and some will invest all the nutrients on their new buds to sustain the growth. Tree scientists discover that trees seem to cherish relationship more than human beings do. No wonder Christ uses different kinds of trees to explain life and truth!

* Christ foresaw His death and willingly offered Himself as a sacrifice to appease the wrath of God. The noble Lamb, without blemish, undefiled – through His sacrifice, God established a new covenant with man – that we might be delivered from darkness and slavery. How can we not rejoice!

Luke 22:1-23

* King Penguin couple work together. Mother penguin lays the eggs for the father to hatch while she hunts for food in the sea for the babies. Father penguin holds the eggs, stands for two months without eating or drinking until the eggs are hatched. Mother penguin returns from a long trip and feeds the babies before father penguin goes for food. Our Creator uses little penguins to demonstrate parental love.

Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. (v27)

* Before Christ returns there will be great tribulation in the world. But we hold our head high and rejoice because the coming of tribulation means the day of our redemption draws near and the redemption of our body is at hand (Romans 8:23). He will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself. (Philippians 3:21)

* Jesus was challenged by a hypothetical question: If seven brothers of a family successively married the widow of their brothers, then how would this complicated marriage relationship be addressed in future when they are all in heaven? Jesus said there will be no more death in heaven. From generation to generation, God is the God of the living. In His eyes all men are living. Time is no longer a concern. Dialectical logics of the present life are unable to comprehend the wonders of the life to come!

* The vineyard was on lease to vinedressers, who were allowed to freely enjoy its fruit there. They were also given autonomy to manage the vineyard. Nevertheless, we must not forget everything in our life belongs to the vineyard owner. God also entrusts us with spiritual property. It is our responsibility to give Him fruit in due time, to live out His life and His attributes. We are accountable to Him!

* Jericho was a wealthy city with palm forests and date palms, important for transportation; with rich water and tax revenue, a vacation hotspot. The corrupt Zacchaeus fattened himself here. But Luke’s mighty pen put a twist in Zacchaeus’ story. He featured this powerful and wealthy short man climbing up a tree to see Jesus. We may have lived in a way that fell short of the glory of God, but God is continually seeking us, and wants to live in our hearts and homes!

* The BBC filmed Red, a male lion, being attacked by more than 20 hyenas and just in that critical moment, his buddy, Tatu, appeared and rushed into the hyenas to save his companion. Red showed his appreciation to Tatu for saving his life in a heartwarming scene.

* In the old days, when a woman got married, coin was used as a headdress, with ten coins strung together, worn over the forehead. Some Bible commentators say woman represents the church and the coin represents believers. The woman lighting up the lamp is a symbol of the Holy Spirit seeking us, the lost ones from the world. The woman having lost a coin is not complete and shameful! How can the church rest with a little one lost?

* For three years the fig tree bears no fruits. The keeper of the vineyard is willing to extend the grace period to dig around it and add fertilizer (grace). * What a wonderful message: The Heavenly Father protects our lives and safety, beyond what He provides for the birds of the sky (v1-12). He also remembers the needs of the disciples; He will provide for us! (v.24)

Luke12:1-34

* The Wall Street Journal reports that in 2021, there were over 319,000,000,000 emails sent. This does not include other modes of communication. Mankind is noisy! But from the standpoint of eternity, what we say is but a fleeting memory. Only the Word of God is eternal. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. (Matthew 24:35) Are we cherishing the words of God? In this deluge of messages, are we receiving God’s word?
