1. Comfort from God – Even in the worst of affliction, Paul trusted in “the God who comforts the lowly”. This is the reason why he never lost faith. (v6)

Be A Christian Soldier

* In August, bible scholar D.A.Carson came to HK. One evening we quietly talked about prayer. His wife was also seriously ill and the doctor diagnosed she would not live beyond 50. Before and after the therapy, there was a lot of turmoil. Even now she suffers from the after effects. But 12 years have passed and she is still living and serving! Carson says it is a blessing from the Lord for a man to know when he will soon leave the world so he can prepare to meet the true God!(Please pray for Mr. & Mrs Carson. Breaking the Bread & Drinking the Cup

1. Proclamation – The bread and the cup is to proclaim the Lord’s redeeming death, it is thanksgiving, it is testifying and also preaching to the non-believers.  (v26)

2. Hope – “till He comes” proclaims a future element in the Lord’s table, bringing in the hope of His second coming. (v26)

Grief & Discipline

1. Grief in the Apostle – Paul grieved over the fact that the church did not mourn for their sins (like mourning for the dead). Instead the church was puffed up, a great sign of falling.  (v2)

2. Discipline in the Apostle – The objective of the discipline is such that the sinner can be saved. The disciplinary action is not for revenge but to redeem. (v5)

Brother shared with us how the Lord loved him – sending a world renowned expert to diagnose and perform surgery on him, all within a very short time;  he felt no pain even after the surgery over a long duration. The Church Life

1. Don’t judge your brothers on 2 things: (a) to his own lord (b) for whom Christ died.  (v4, 15)

2. To establish the church life we have to positively go after: righteousness (to God), peace (to men) and joy in the Holy Spirit (to self). (v17)

Spirit of God (1)

1. Indwelling — Spirit of God lives in man’s heart, not temporarily but permanently even as the owner of the inhabited land. (v9)

2. Leading — The life led by the Spirit of God focuses on eternity. While we live in this world, we walk towards eternity in an unchanging pace. (v14)

Gospel

1. The debt of the gospel — Gospel is to repay the debt, to fulfill the responsibility. The grace that came free from God should be freely shared with others. (v14)

2. The power of God — Paul did not say the gospel brought power, he said gospel was power. Preaching the gospel is to release this power. (v16)

1. Confession before the Judge — Paul’s confession before the council: (1) He lives before God, (2) He has a clear conscience and (3) He is godly as ever. (v1)

2. Vision at the castle — After a day’s agony, that night Paul heard the Lord saying ‘”Be of good cheer”. This is a requiem putting his soul at peace. (v11)

Vision In Corinth

1. His Profession — Paul had faith as such: he is a teacher, a preacher while holding a job, earning his own living. (v3)

2. His Vision — Paul was attacked and in fear. In his vision, God’s guarantee ‘I am with you’ kept him in good faith and encouraged. (v10)

The First Miracle

1. Peter said what he had to give to the lame was better than silver and gold – the ability to restore one’s life. What can be better than this?  (v6)

* God grants ‘Take Two’! – Scholar WK BAO/鮑維均once went to the casino to preach the gospel. The pastor said he hated the number 7 because he had to take the HK Certificate Exam 7 times and the driver license test 7 times. He worked hard to get into the famous university, got his Master degree, and everything was going well. Then in 2003, a medical exam revealed he might have cancer.  It was the time when SARS hit and he could not be treated…One time while driving he was touched by the message he heard. He stopped the car and said in tears, “God… I don’t know how many more days I have left but regardless, I give those days to you!”  After SARS, further diagnosis confirmed he did not have cancer. To fulfill his commitment, he studied and served in the church. God waves His hand to those in difficult times, take heed and you will sense it!

Two Men Who Are Facing Pressure

1. Jesus was standing boldly before the counsel and faced the trial. Jesus admitted and declared He Himself was fulfilling the prophecy in the Bible. (v62)

2. Peter was with the maid in the court, hiding out and denying the Lord. Is there a chance that he could turn back? (v72)

Fruit  Search

1. Tree Without Fruit — The fig tree symbolizes Israel for its abundance in leaves but not bearing any fruits. Can the Lord find fruits in you? (v20)

2. Temple Without God — The temple as the center of religion, busy with actions and activities, is in fact occupied with worldly rituals. Let’s take heed in not repeating the same in our church today. (v17)

The Mystery About Messiah

1. The enemies’ resistance — What hinders the ministry of the heavenly kingdom lies with the disbelief of the leaders in religion. The Lord took a deep sigh in His spirit out of frustration, discouragement and grief. (v12)

2. The disciples’ stubbornness — The disciples saw with their own eyes a series of miracles but lacked the understanding as to who the Lord really was! Isn’t this reflecting our condition too! (v17)

Is Divorce Permitted?

1. God’s will right in the beginning — Marriage is God’s most important task in man’s life. Divorce is hence destroying His works. (v6)

2. One manner of compromise — God does not tell us to divorce but He permits it. This is because He is willing to put up with man who treats His will with no respect. (v8)

Lord Of Both Realms

Sermon on the Mount

1. Blessed are the Poor in Spirit s submission — A characteristic in the citizens of the Heavenly kingdom is that they know that they are poor, having nothing, hence they rely on God solely, taking God as their sole possession. (v3)

2. Blessed are the Persecuted — It is a big honor for citizens of the Heavenly kingdom to be persecuted and reproached. They have the part to be listed among the great saints and sages. (v10-12)

* A daughter’s thoughts at her father’s passing away — Salvation of my father came through extreme difficulties! In the beginning, he strongly objected his children going to church, to a point of mobilizing the discipline rod of our family. It is truly God’s mercy on him to soften his stiff-neck and ill-temper, bringing him to repentance! One day, he complained to my sister about a great pain in his leg and my sister followed the leading of the Holy Spirit and took him to pray with her. What a miracle, the pain in his leg was easing the next morning! Since that day, he would kneel and pray to the Lord, asking for healing and grace! For many years, he opened his home for group
fellowship, making Bibles and hymn books available for the meeting. The Lord’s Table is a solemn event for him. He was never late, always properly dressed! For a believer, all who are dead will rise to life. I firmly believe that we will meet again one day, and we will receive the return of the Lord together. — Ah Fong/HK

God Who Intervenes History

1. A thief who boasts about his theft — The Lord’s second coming is like that of a thief. No one will be there to welcome Him, nor expecting Him.  What man should do is to wait with vigilance, not speculating future. (v15)

2. God who burns with fury – The 7 bowls are not about revenge. It is about justification. It is the righteous God’s ultimate disposal of the evil. (v17)
